A Match to be Made

Deciding where to attend college certainly feels like a monumental decision to most high school students.

For years, I've explained to students that their decisions about which college to attend is a big one, but certainly not the biggest or most difficult that they will ever make. The decisions not to use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs; to abstain from sex; and not to text and drive are much larger teenage life decisions.

Parents, who usually help make the financial investment, understand the significance of the investment they are about to make. But most also are concerned about helping their child find a college that is a good fit for that student's interests, personality, and academic strengths.

And this is the heart of Eller's College Connection: the College Search Service.

I consult with students and their families to understand the applicant's strengths, weaknesses, goals, and interests, as well as his or her parents' concerns, and then offer a list of colleges and/or universities that best meet these criteria. It does not matter what your grades are: I have worked with all levels of academic achievement. In 30 years, I have seen it all.

Through a series of homework assignments, you will learn exactly what you need to know to formulate your short list of colleges and universities that are right for you. Assignments include learning

  • The difference between a college and a university
  • Whether a college or a university is best suited to you
  • How to complete the Common Application
  • How to help your teachers write great letters of recommendation for you
  • How admissions decisions are made
  • How to determine what is important and what's really important in your criteria list
  • How to get the most bang for your tuition buck; and much, much more!
